Apple Recalls Older European iPhone Power Adapters due to 'Overheating'

On Friday, Apple Inc. announced that it is recalling some European iPhone 5W USB adapters due to possible overheating issues. The chargers were shipped with iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, but were also sold as a separate accessory.

Though the device's malfunction was only found in "rare cases," the company is still urging those who have the charger to discontinue use. They have also offered a replacement model free of charge, according to CNET. 

The charger was sold in 37 countries throughout Europe, as well as several in Africa and Asia, with the recall affecting plugs that were sold between October 2009 and September 2012.

"Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange every affected power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge," Apple said. "We encourage customers to exchange any affected adapter for a new one as soon as possible using the exchange process below."

For customers who have a plug that has already overheated, they are advised to contact Apple for a refund of the product as well as a replacement. Anyone who also bought an iPhone during the time period announced by the company who fears their product may overheat can have his/her device exchanged after verifying the phone's serial number.

Apple said it has "voluntarily introduced a program for customers to exchange the Apple 5W European USB Power Adapter which came with iPhone 3GS,  iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S models through September 2012, because in rare cases the adapter may overheat and pose a safety risk."
