Pandas at San Diego Zoo Enjoy Snowy Day

The seven-month-old cub Xiao Liwu, youngest member of the panda family at the San Diego zoo, witnessed a new experience recently as it got to play in the snow for the first time.

"Xiao Liwu was jumping on Mom, wrestling with her and getting used to being thrown in the snow by mama bear," Jennifer Becerra, San Diego Zoo senior keeper, said in a statement. "He was definitely enjoying the snow and running around. I've never seen him so wired up."

Xiao Liwu (little gift) was born in the summer to mother Bai Yun and father Gao Gao. Xaio Liwu is the sixth panda cub born in the zoo under the 12-year agreement with China and made his first public debut in the zoo in January, reports ABC News.

Zoo keepers had blown over 15 tons of fresh snow into the panda's exhibit as part of an enrichment surprise for them.

The zoo officials managed the snow for the giant pandas by funds received from donors who contributed to its online Animal Care Wish List to provide 30,000 pounds of snow.

Becerra wrote in her BlogSpot that a truck was used that is specially designed to convert large ice blocks into snow. With the help of large hoses, they sprayed snow into the entire panda exhibit.

There are about 1,600 pandas left in the wild. More than 300 are present in zoos and other breeding centers.
