Penile-vaginal intercourse has been associated with many different physiological functions of the body. A recent study conducted by a group of scientists from McGill University, Montreal, Canada revealed that frequent sex can significantly improve memory functions in females.

The team of Canadian scientists led by Larah Maunder did a survey on a group of 78 heterosexual women in the age group of 18-29 years. The verbal and facial memory of the subjects was tested using a computerized memory paradigm, which encompassed a list of abstract words and a number of neutral faces.

The memory test results were interlinked to the frequency of sex in the subjects. It was observed that women who had frequent and regular penile-vaginal intercourse were able to memorize words better than those with who did not. However, the test based on the memory of faces did not reveal the same results. The finding of the study was published in November 2016 in the Archives of Sexual Behavior Journal, Springer.

Previous studies conducted on rat models had revealed that sex is directly linked to neurogenesis in the hippocampus region of the brain. Hippocampus is responsible for verbal memory and this substantiates the recent finding, according to which having sex on a regular basis can stimulate the hippocampus of females and boost memory functions. On the other hand memory of faces is basically controlled by the extra hippocampal region of brain which according to present research findings does not show any direct correlation with sexual intercourse.

Another study done in the Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, under the leadership of distinguished scientist B. Blair Braden, was recently published in Aging, Neuroscience and Cognition Journal, Taylor & Francis. The study revealed that menopausal women under hormone therapy (HT) have increased hippocampal volume as compared to non-HT women and men. This increase in hippocampal volume significantly contributed in verbal learning and delayed verbal memory performance.

Similar studies relating to men are under progress but no significant results are published yet. As of now, it is certain that penile-vaginal sex does much more than just giving moments of pleasure. It acts as a neural stimulant and who knows what else people are going to find in the future?
