Diabetics must not only keep watch on what they are eating but also must be keen on what they are drinking. This is to ensure that their blood sugar levels would not increase and keep them in good condition.

To control blood sugar, the diabetics must eat a balanced diet. Foods and drinks with carbohydrates must be consumed moderately. The amounts of carbohydrates must be managed well. The food labels and nutritional facts must provide the serving size and carbohydrate content of any food and drinks.

So, what are the best drinks for people with diabetes? The American Diabetes Association recommends drinks with zero-calorie or very low-calorie drinks. These include water, coffee, unsweetened teas, low-calorie drinks and drink mixes and diet soda. They can also drink water with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice. These drinks have a small number of calories and carbohydrate.

The Medical News Today advises diabetics to drink herbal tea and milk, too. One example of an herb is the licorice root. This gives a delicate sweet flavor yet will not raise their blood sugar levels. Its extract may also help lessen the blood sugar of diabetics.

Milk that is best for people with diabetes is the fat-free cow or soy milk, unsweetened nut milk or rice milk. These could give vitamins, minerals and calories. Choose the unsweetened varieties.

Meanwhile, drinks that diabetics must avoid are regular soda, fruit drinks, sweet tea, fruit punch, energy drinks and other sugary drinks. These drinks will increase their blood glucose. They also provide a hundred calories in one serving.

A can of 12-ounce regular soda has about 40 grams of carbohydrates and 150 calories. This is about teaspoons of sugar. Meanwhile, a cup of fruit punch and other sugary drinks have around 100 calories or more and 30 grams of carbohydrate.

If they opt for a juice, choose 100 percent juice with no sugar added. For alcohol drinks, diabetics must drink them with moderation. Beers have carbohydrates yet alcohol does not have sugar. On the other hand, many alcohol mixers have sugar. People with diabetes must have light drinking.
