A new species of scorpion has been discovered in the Santa Catalina Mountains in Southern Arizona. Researchers were surprised to find the scorpion in a large metropolitan area.

The newly found species has been named Vaejovis Brysoni. Another scorpion belonging to the same group inhabits these mountain ranges that overlook the Tucson city making it the first documented case of two vorhiese group species inhabiting the same mountain.

The specie has been named after Dr Rob Byrson Jr. who discovered it while hunting for a different animal. The specimens collected were later sent to the authors who analyzed the specie and confirmed whether the specimens were indeed a new scorpion specie.

According to the study published in the journal Zookeys, for over 50 years, only four species of mountain scorpions were known from the state of Arizona. And over the past six years this number has more than doubled and 10 more species have been discovered that belong to the same group.

The new species have been discovered in the Sky Islands. Arizona is famous for its isolated mountain habitats in the desert and they are referred to as Sky Islands.

"This latest new scorpion is a prime example of the amazing diversity of life still to be discovered, right here in 21st century America.," Richard F. Ayrey, one of the co-author of the original article said in a press statement.
