While gamers were expecting the highly anticipated gaming title "Dead Island 2" to get released at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016, the same did not happen.

It's been almost two years that the zombie survival game sequel was announced during Playstation's press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2014. A demo gameplay from an early version of "Dead Island 2" was also released at Gamescom 2014.

Previously it was reported that "Dead Island 2" would likely get a 2016 release. However, new reports suggest the game is currently under development stage and is still worked on by Sumo Digital, which replaced Yager Development as the game developer last March.

The zombie game was originally supposed to get released in August 2015. But, the release was postponed to 2016 after the then developer failed to complete the game in time. In fact, "Dead Island 2" was even believed to get cancelled after Deep Silver and Yager Development separated ways last year. But, the game resurrected again after its reins were handed over to UK studio Sumo Digital back in March.

The rumors of the game getting cancelled fueled again this year after the game was removed from Steam's search engine page in May. However, Deep Silver has confirmed on a Twitter post that they are still working on "Dead Island 2," and more information will be revealed "at a later stage."

"It just made perfect sense for us to move the project to them. We will reveal more details at a later stage, but for now I'd like to say that we are obviously super excited about the progress that we are making with them," the gaming company said.

"Dead Island 2" is expected to be available for the Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2016.
