A new study warned those who drop homemade for a large cheesy pizza or a greasy French fries have a higher risk of developing diabetes than those who consume meals prepared at home.

The study, which was published in the journal PLOS Medicine, asked large prospective datasets in which US health professionals, both men and women, were constantly checked for long periods, with extensive collection of data on health indicators, like self-reported information on eating habits and occurrence of diabetes.

According to research, individuals who often have meals from outside such as fast food are at a higher risk of gaining weight which is a major cause in the development of Type 2 diabetes. These concerns have been addressed by Qi Sun from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health explaining that these people have a diet rich in energy but not in nutrients.  Diets as such can lead to weight gain, which is a major risk factor in an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Ndtv.com reported that the findings revealed that people who consume at least five to seven evening meals prepared at home in a week has a 15 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who consumed two of the same meals or fewer in a week.

An article in Science Daily explained that a small significant reduction was obvious for those who consume more midday meals prepared at home. Other examination showed that less weight gain could somehow explain the decrease in the number of incidence of type 2 diabetes with people who often eat meals prepared at home.

Economic Times also reported that traditional diabetes prevention strategies have behavioral interventions that encourage an increase in exercise and improve diet habits. The nutritional and lifestyle benefits of having home-cooked meals could contribute to these diabetes prevention efforts, the researchers suggested.
