25 Teaspoons Of Sugar Are In Some Coffee Drinks: That's More Than Some Sodas

Most of us know to watch out for soda since it's loaded down with tons of sugar, but what about our favorite coffee drinks? Turns out, a lot of those--at some of our favorite brand places like Starbucks--are just as bad if not more so when it comes to being heavily loaded with sweet stuff.

A new report by the British organization "Action on Sugar" shows that about 98 percent of hot flavored drinks have excessive amounts of sugar per serving.

"They are laden with an unbelievable amount of sugar and calories and are often accompanied by a high sugar and fat snack. It is not surprising that we have the highest rate of obesity in Europe," Kawther Hashem, registered nutritionist and researcher for Action on Sugar, told The Guardian. "Our advice to consumers is to have a plain hot drink or ask for your drink to contain a minimal amount of syrup, preferably sugar-free, in the smallest serving size available."

The report shows that a drink from Starbucks could contain up to 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving.

That's three times the amount of sugar in one can of Coke. In a response to the report, Starbucks says it has committed to reduce sugar in its "indulgent drinks" by 25 percent by the end of 2020.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should consume in a day are 7, with men consuming no more than 150 calories from added sugar per day (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons) and women consuming 100 calories of added sugar per day (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).

However, it's important to remember that coffee without the sugar can be good for your health. Looking back on all the studies that circulate the web, some research suggests that drinking coffee can lower your risk of type II diabetes, help burn fat and lower your risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease; not to mention that it's loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. 

But, regardless of whether you've put some cream and sugar in your coffee or left it black, make sure not to drink too much. Drinking excess amounts of coffee can cause jitters and potentially rob bones of calcium due to an overload of caffeine
