Toyota Presents First All-electric SUV at LA Show

The first all-electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) was presented by Toyota to the market on Monday. In cooperation with Tesla Motors a new version of the popular RAV4 with about 100 miles maximum range and a six hour charging time. It will soon be available to select locations in California.

Toyota now hopes to attract first technology first accepters similar to its introduction of hybrid cars through the Prius 15 years ago as Bob Carter, Group Vice President and General Manager, explained at the 2012 Electric Vehicle Symposium in Los Angeles, where he presented the car.

Tesla contributed the power train and high performance 41.8kW lithium-ion battery packs, which last approximately 100 miles and propel the slightly heavier RAV4 EV from 0 to 60 mile per hour in seven seconds. The about 460 pounds additional weight compared to its V6 brother was shifted downward center of the vehicle, giving a more sedan-like driving experience, according to Toyota.

For the princely sum of $49,800, about double the price of its gasoline counterpart, this first of its kind electric SUV can be bought in Sacramento, Bay Area, Los Angeles / Orange County and San Diego. Just a 240V / 40A home charging station will be needed as well to recharge it again after the daily short commute.
