Kraft Recalls Velveeta Cheese Products in 12 States

Despite Kraft's cheesy goodness, one of the company's popular staples--Velveeta Cheese--has been recalled in 12 states due to low sorbic acid levels that may cause the food to spoil faster. Kraft Foods is taking back 260 cases of the 32-ounce blocks of processed "original" flavor cheese that were shipped to Walmarts throughout the Midwest, according to the Chicago Tribune.

For many foods, a product's sorbic acid helps to prevent the cheese (and other foods) from rotting as well as any the risk of potential foodborne illnesses. Unfortunately, the company discovered inadequate amounts of preservatives in the product, which could pose a risk to the consumers' health.

The voluntary recall involved Velveeta products in the following states: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin, according to a news release.

Kraft has, however, noted that the risk of foodborne illness from the food is very small. However, the company continued to push for a voluntary recall just in case. For anyone in the aforementioned areas who has the original flavor, 32-oz Velveeta's UPC code 021000611614 with a date stamp reading "17 DEC 2014," they should not eat the product and return it immediately for a full refund.
