The climatology of U.S. tornadoes in the Midwest notes that there have been an unusual number of twisters hitting the area for this year.

Sunday alone marked the biggest number of tornadoes seen in over 40 years, according to ABC News, with 81 reports of the environmental disaster in Illinois, Kentucky, Indian, Ohio and Missouri.

Illinois was hit hardest with 43 tornadoes, shortly followed by Indian with 32, and at least six people in Illinois were found dead due to the severe weather and damaged homes.

Unfortunately, more tornadoes may pop up as the spring is the time known to bring the nasty weather condition--particularly towards environments that are more prone for such weather.

This violent whirlwind usually develops during a severe thunderstorm and can increase up to 200 miles an hour. The winds of a tornado can be deadly--snapping trees and power lines, destroying homes and cars and even killing individuals in its way. The sound coming from a tornado can also be quite unnerving, as many describe it as a deafening ringing or whistling noise.

Tornadoes also come in different shapes and sizes. Some may extend to over a mile, while others could simply be a short skinny circle spiraling into the clouds. The color of a wind tunnel involved in a tornado could also range from gray, dark gray to nearly black. And the sky before and after may cast tinges of green, yellow or even red.
