New findings published in the journal Menopause show that cultural differences could ultimately influence when women will start this change in their life.

As menopause typically occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, otherwise known as the period in which they are no longer menstruating, a recent survey found that some problems associated with it are more common in certain countries or may begin sooner.

The survey was conducted online and consisted of between 8,200 older men and women in countries around North American and Europe. Participants were asked how menopause affected their relationships and their sex lives.

More specifically, the survey focused on women already going through postmenopausal changes between the ages of 55 and 65 and men who were in relationships with women that age in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden, Norway and Italy.

Researchers found that while some issues were relatively common in most countries, things like vaginal dryness, hot flashes and even weight gain can depend more on nationality.

Furthermore, many of the symptoms seemed to be more prevalent in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. However, they were less prevalent in Sweden and Italy.

"Postmenopausal women and male partners of postmenopausal women may benefit from greater education about menopause and open discussions with their healthcare provider," the study concluded
