If you want to workout and save money doing it, a bike might be right up your alley.

Researchers at Lund University and the University of Queensland found that traveling by car was six times more expensive for society and people than cycling alone.

For the study, researchers examined the cost-benefit analysis by the Copenhagen Municipality to see if new cycling infrastructure should be built. Then, they looked at the price of purchasing a car along with insurance to see how it might compare to bicycles in terms of air pollution, noise, climate change, travel route, road wear, health and congestion in Copenhagen.

Researchers found that cars had a greater impact on the economy than bicycles, when private costs were put together.

"If the costs to society and the costs to private individuals are added together, the impact of the car is EUR 0.50 per kilometre and the impact of the bicycle is EUR 0.08 per kilometre," researchers wrote, according to Phys.Org.

"The cost-benefit analysis in Copenhagen shows that investments in cycling infrastructure and bike-friendly policies are economically sustainable and give high returns," researcher Stefan Gössling added, via a news release.

More information regarding the findings can be seen via the journal Ecological Economics.
