After 18 years of attempting to foster social graces in Patrick, a Western lowland gorilla, who has resisted all attempts to integrate with others, the Dallas Zoo finally bid him a relieved farewell.

Born on April 13, 1990 at the Bronx Zoo, the 23-year-old has been a visitors' favorite ever since he came to Dallas zoo. But sadly due to an ambivalence toward his female counterparts and his preference for a life of solitude, the zoo has decided to shift him to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, South Carolina, where he can spend the remaining years of his bachelor life.

The South Carolina zoo is known for working with gorillas suffering from  behavioral problems. reports  Reuters.

"We have tried for years to socialize Patrick with other gorillas. It's become clear that he prefers to live a solitary life...," said Lynn Kramer, D.V.M, vice president of animal operations for Dallas Zoo s.

Patrick's departure from the zoo will permit the staff to introduce its newest male gorillas 'Shana' and 'Zola' to the present male residents B'wenzi and Juba, thereby forming the zoo's largest bachelor troop.

"...This move will allow Patrick to continue to thrive while creating an opportunity for our four remaining males to form a cohesive bachelor group," Karmer said.

According to the zoo keepers, the 430 pound regal silverback Patrick is intelligent and uses tools wells. He interacts well with the public as well as the zoo staff but refrains from forming relationships with other gorillas. He has resisted all attempts made by the zoo staff.

Patrick displayed aggression and indifference when he was introduced to two separate female groups. In 2011 when he was introduced to a group of females he showed total disinterest after showing some initial tolerance.

Patrick has had a long journey. After his birth at Bornx Zoo he was transferred to the Toronto Zoo before his first birthday due to lack of maternal attention. At Toronto Zoo he was hand raised with another male of the same age. Later at the age of 5 he was welcomed by the Dallas Zoo where he was integrated into a small troop that consisted of one silverback and two females. On maturity the two males were excluded from the troop to form a bachelor group.

Later this week the zoo will host a 'We'll Miss Ya, Patrick!" celebration where the fans can share their memories and photos of Patrick on the Zoo's Facebook and Instagram pages. For more details Click Here
