Yaz Lawsuit: Blood Clots, DVT and Pulmonary Embolism Alleged Complications

Yaz Birth Control has come under fire recently for women who have allegedly experienced complications involving the drug. In fact, some of the women who had previously used the product sued drug maker Bayer for their injuries.

It's noted that more than 10,000 Americans have filed lawsuits against Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella. Various claims accuse Bayer and others of negligence, product liability, and other issues involving the birth control prescriptions.

According to Yaz Lawsuit, Bayer is accused of launching a marketing campaign that's misled consumers regarding the possible benefits of the drug, including failing to adequately warn patients regarding the risks and medical complications.

Many believed that officials did not produce adequate information regarding the side effects of the pills, which contain the hormones ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. 

A judicial panel transferred federal lawsuits involving the drugs to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. The Honorable David R. Herndon was assigned to manage the cases according to Multidistrict Litigation No. 2100.

Drug Watch notes the following regarding the trials: "The first trials were scheduled for early 2012, but the judge postponed them to encourage settlement talks. Later that year, Bayer reportedly agreed to pay at least $110 million to settle hundreds of Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits. The settlements were estimated at $220,000 per case. Settlements have continued. According to reports, by October 2012, Bayer had settled 3,490 U.S. claims involving blood clots associated with Yasmin for $750 million.

"As of August 2013, more than 1,000 MDL cases had been resolved, and more than 9,800 cases were pending."
