A record breaking 17 pounds 6 ounces northern snakefish was snagged by a Virginia man on June 1 in Aquia Creek, a tributary of Potomac River, Virginia.

A Spotsylvania County resident, Caleb Newton, 27, caught this massive snakefish during a fishing tournament,

The International Game Fish Association will offer a certificate confirming the record breaking catch, reports The Free Lance Star.

"His record has been approved and we'll be sending the certificate later this week, or early next week," Jack Vitek, world-record coordinator for the Florida-based IGFA, said. "It's signed by our president and an executive committee member, and gives basic details about the species caught, the weight and date of the catch."

Newton's catch has broken the previous record of a 2004 snakehead that measured 17 pounds 4 ounces and was snagged in Miki Kagawa, Japan, reveals the Associated Press.

This young plumber who set himself a record claimed that he struggled for a minute to get that massive creature into the boat and was finally helped by a friend to reel it in. He said that the fish failed to fit  in his cooler.

The fish is also called 'Frankenfish' based on the monster movie Frankenfish that pictures a genetically engineered fish in bayou.

The northern snakehead fish that is a highly invasive fish in the U.S. is native to Russia, China and Korea.  This freshwater species cannot survive in saline waters and is an obligate air breather. They can even survive outside water for several days because of the unusual respiratory system. They are found in stagnant waters and feed on crustaceans, amphibians and other invertebrates, source Wikipedia.
