Shark Bitten Harbor Seal Pup Rescued by SeaWorld Returns to Wild

A year-old harbor seal pup 'sharky' rescued by SeaWorld after it suffered life threatening shark bites, has finally been released into the ocean on Friday.

The young female seal pup that was discovered on La Jolla beach on June 28 with severe injuries was rescued and treated at the Park's center by the animal care staff. The female seal pup was nursed back to health and showed a drastic improvement in her weight. She weighed 55 pounds on her release compared to the 32 pounds when she was rescued.

Along with Sharky, SeaWorld also released another harbor seal that was rescued after they spotted it entangled in a fishing line. Joining them was a California sea lion that was treated for severe malnourishment at the park and was released as it had recovered fully.

According to the officials of the theme park, they have rescued more than 400 marine mammals this year and most of them have been returned back to the waters, reports Fox5 Sandiego.

When people spot seals that have beached themselves, it is always recommended to stay away from them for the good of both the animal and humans. Seals are federally protected and according to law, people should stay at a distance of 150 feet from them. Though they are young, seals bite, which can be dangerous.
