In a bizarre turn of events, a 60-year-old woman in Indore district, India, gave birth to a baby girl after being admitted to a hospital for unusual stomach pain on Thursday.

Lilabai who complained of severe abdominal pain was initially admitted to the Prakash Chand Sethi Hospital (PCS hospital) in Indore. On examination doctors were amazed to discover that the woman was pregnant with her fourth child. It was a shock to the mother of three as well.

Fearing complications,  Dr. Urmial Tiwari, gynaecologist at PCS hospital, who initially examined Lilaben, referred her to Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital on the same evening where she gave birth to her baby via caesarean section.

After age 50 it is difficult for women to conceive. And if after medical assistance it happens, it is a risky and complicated pregnancy.  Women who get pregnant after 50 are at a risk of increased occurrence of gestational diabetes, hypertension, miscarriage, placenta previa. They can give birth to premature babies or low weight babies and the risk of fetal mortality is double.

There have been women around the world who gave birth after crossing the age of 50. In the year 2010,  Wu Cheng a 60- year-old Chinese woman gave birth to two premature twin girls via C-section. In the same year, Princess Lia Georgia Triff, wife of Prince Paul Philippe Hohenzollern of Romania, gave birth to a boy when she was 60 years, 10 months and 19 days old. But what remains different in Lilaben's case is that she was not aware she was carrying a baby.

Lilaben, a resident of Rasanpura village of Khandwa district, was suffering from low hemoglobin and doctors stabilized her condition before doing the C-section, reports The Times of India.

"The patient and the baby are healthy. The lady has delivered a girl baby weighing 3.5 kg," Dr Lakshmi Maru, head of gynaecology department, MYH Hospital told newspersons.
