A new mother celebrated this Memorial Day weekend with a big surprise. On Friday, she gave birth to a 13-pound, 10-ounce baby girl at Whittier Hospital Medical Center.

Named Kaelyn, mother Yvette Hernandez of Bell Gardens can be seen cradling her bundle of joy, who will soon be joining an older brother and sister in the family's home.

"Mom and baby are resting comfortably in the hospital's (obstetrics) unit," Whittier Hospital Medical Center officials said Saturday in a written statement.

They were expected to go home Monday.

The girl is, "the largest baby born at the hospital that anyone can remember," according to the hospital statement.

And even with Kaelyn's unusually large size, she came a week early, according to her mother.

"She's quiet," her mother said of the first day with her new baby, who's responses were reported as relatively calm and quiet, especially for a newborn.

Hospital spokesman Jay Greer said the baby's birth weight was almost double that of a normal baby.  "It was a surprise," Hernandez said, who's first child weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces at birth, and her second weighed 10 pounds 10 ounces.

Yet this baby is nothing compared to a child that broke the record books back in 1879 and still holds the title as the biggest baby. Born in Canada to a woman named Ann Bates, this little bundle of joy weighed in at 23 pounds, 12 ounces or almost double the weight of Kaelyn.
