For most of us, our first taste of alcohol comes in college. But for an unlucky few, they get a taste in the womb.

According to Mirror News, a new mother is facing jail time after she gave birth to a baby boy while she was smashed.

Due to her heavy drinking, surgeons were forced to perform an emergency caesarean after the 24-year-old lady collapsed trying to buy even more booze in Tomaszow, Poland, according to various reports.

The baby was born with severe alcohol poisoning due to excess levels of liquor in his mother's blood stream.

"The unborn baby was in severe danger of being poisoned to death," said hospital spokesman Wojciech Zawalski. "When he came out of his heart was barely beating and he had 4.5g of alcohol in his blood."

The blood-alcohol limit for drivers in Poland is 0.2g, meaning the infant was born at nearly 23 times the drink-drive limit.

The baby, who was two weeks premature, is recovering in an intensive care incubator where he is being weened off alcohol.

Police and prosecutors are now quizzing the mother over charges of endangering the life of an unborn child.

"The matter is under investigation," said a police spokesman.
