Creating Art from Barcodes

These days, UPC barcodes have become a part of our everyday lives in so many different ways and in so many different industries. In addition to this, they have become an inspiration to artists throughout the world. In these modern and ever changing times, artists are creating innovative and bold pieces of art with UPC barcodes as the main inspiration. How on earth are they doing that one might ask?

Firstly, artists such as interior designers and decorators have been creating paintings and wall decorations such as vinyl art and stickers from UPC barcodes. These normally involve the black bars and possibly the number underneath it, if perhaps the number has a special meaning to the owner. These pieces of wall art have become a stylish part of many people's homes throughout the world. People have designed them to go onto coffee cups, clothing, postcards and even magnets. People tend to enjoy this as it is so very unique as well as neat, straight lined and appealing to the eye.

Another way that artists express themselves is through designing tattoos of barcodes. These also incorporate the bars as well as other pictures or words. Some of these tattoos can even be scanned, how amazing is that? They are designed to make a meaningful statement either about the individual person or society at large. This is also a great concept used often by people who would like to have a very personal tattoo done with a meaningful saying that they do not want to share with the world. Barcodes allow for hidden data and messages to be placed in this way.

Even furniture design has been susceptible to the influence. Artists have created all sorts of furniture based on the design of barcodes, ranging from benches to sofas to cupboards. They have become a truly unique form of interior design. They have also been used in public spaces such as bus benches or museum chairs.

They have been used to make public statements and to change people's perceptions of the world around them. UPC Barcodes have been incorporated into billboards in such a way that it makes people think and leaves an impression that is not easily forgotten. In the below picture, the billboard is attempting to raise awareness about human trafficking a topic that is a huge problem worldwide and that needs to be confronted urgently. It makes a bold, public statement that people will remember. The picture states that “People shouldn’t be bought and sold” and the code is relating to products that are bought and sold in retail stores. This is a clever way to get people to think and see how terrible the notion is of treating people human beings as objects. A very sad topic but a very real one.

Another use of incorporating UPC barcodes into billboards is to promote products. Billboards reach an extremely large amount of people in a short time period. This makes them very effective tools of marketing. As if you drive past the same billboard on a daily basis it locks into your memory and you tend to remember that specific product when in the grocery store doing your shopping. This is known as Memory recall.

Another bold and brave way to make a statement is to use UPC barcodes in graffiti. This has become more and more popular throughout the world. It is eye catching and makes the artist's work truly memorable and unforgettable. This is one way to create your own stories in the world.

Even architects have jumped on this bandwagon. They are creating buildings designed around barcodes. The most famous example is the red building in St. Petersburg, Russia. This building was designed by Vitruvius & Sons and it is actually a shopping mall. In this building, the bars of the barcodes have formed the windows of the building and the number is written on top. This is a very creative and innovative way of designing a shopping mall. This building is a bright and remarkable icon in the middle of very bland, grey communist architecture. It really makes a statement in the political world we live in. it has become very famous and a known tourist attraction. You can see some pictures of this building here.

What about getting a pedicure with barcodes painted on your nails?  This is a unique and very bold way to decorate your nails, but you can believe it will eye catching. It is even possible to use them in your website design. One of the most well-known and popular artist that incorporates this into his art is Scott Blake. If you visit his website the first image you see is of a giant barcode. This is where you enter his site.  He does a huge variety of art with UPC barcodes, ranging from portraits to clocks to baby bibs.  It is even popular to have a watch with a design of a code.
