Another meteorite crashed on Earth. This time around, the meteorite caught fire and crashed on Earth as a fireball that shook the ground. It terrified the tourists and locals in Spain that witnessed the incident. This is the second time a meteorite was seen falling from space. Will the next one wipe out humanity?

Local residents and tourists from Southern Spain witnessed a meteor falling to the Earth as a giant fireball. The meteor fell to the Earth at 72,000 kilometers per hour. According to Daily Star, the witnesses felt a small earthquake when the meteorite finally made the impact. The meteor fell around 10.:25 p.m. local time last Dec. 11.

According to Meteoroides.net, the meteor fireball could be seen from most of Spain, flew over the Granada and Jaén provinces. Numerous witnesses have reported having heard an explosion and felt a slight tremor, like a small earthquake, as the meteorite made contact with the ground. Station observatories of the University of Huelva in Almeda, Toledo, Granada and Seville also reported having witnessed the light from the flaming meteorite.

According to various reports, the meteorite crash coincided with the Geminids meteor shower that occurs every year in December. Scientists believe that some part of the huge meteorite could have survived the crash. This piece of meteorite is an important specimen to be used for future studies.

This is not the first time a meteorite fell on Earth this month. Last Dec. 6, a meteorite bathes a Siberian town in light, turning the nighttime into daytime. A small explosion was reported to have been heard by the witnesses when it fell. Russian astronomers said the meteorite burned up in the sky so there was only a little explosion when it fell.

According to NASA, meteorites or generally known as Near-Earth Objects (NEO) frequently crash on Earth. However, most of the NEOs fall on the ocean or deep forests. It is only seldom when NEOs fall on or near human settlements. What people should be worried about is if an asteroid would crash on Earth.

Asteroids are much larger than Near-Earth Objects. Some are as large as Earth itself. The Guardian reports that a worried scientist urged NASA to develop an interceptor missile that will stop or destroy an incoming asteroid or comet. Although NASA has already established a planetary defense office, humans are still unprepared if ever an asteroid or a comet truly crashes on Earth.

When an asteroid as large as Earth or even half of Earth crashes on the planet, an inceptor missile, even if it is a nuclear missile, would be of little use. An asteroid crash would most likely cause the wipe out of humanity. This is what scientists believed to have happened that caused the extinction of dinosaurs.
