From following simple tips to sharing natural beauty secrets, to drastic cosmetic operations, people are obsessed with how to look young and how to stop aging. Using a computer algorithm, Russian scientists have identified geroprotectors and the 10 substances that are both effective for looking and staying young.

Published in the top journal about aging, Aging, Russians scientists have shared the results of their study on how a computer algorithm has helped identify geroprotectors and substances essential to stop aging and look young. In collaboration with Insilico Medicine Inc. and commissioned by the Center for Biogerontology and Regenerative Medicine, Russian scientists have developed the Geroscope.

Geroscope identifies geroprotectors on the human skin. Geroprotectors are said to be substances that contribute to the extension of human life. In order to identify the geroprotectors, the Russian scientists analyzed transcriptomic data, information from the DNA and transcribed into RNA, in young and old samples of different human tissues. The young human tissue samples came from donors of ages 15 to 30. The old human tissue samples came from donors whose ages range over 60.

A computer modeling of the data collected from the young and old human tissue samples is used to identify and map out the molecular pathways associated with aging, KU Leuven reported. Using Geroscope, the scientists have not only created a 3D modeling of the molecular pathways but can also analyze cell reactions against known substances used in geroprotective drugs.

From the database of geroprotective drugs with 70 known compounds, Geroscope has narrowed the substances to 10. These 10 substances were selected based on their geroprotective properties and according to the specifications of the computer model. The 10 substances are then tested in their effect on cell rejuvenation and cell survival.

The results show that Myricetin has a mild rejuvenating effect, while ECGG has a strong rejuvenating effect. NDGA has no rejuvenating effect but does affect cell survival, while NAC, with a mild rejuvenating effect, has increased short-and-long cell survival. Substance PD-98059 has shown the most potential with a strong rejuvenating effect and increases in short-and-long-term survival.

The results from the use of Geroscope was validated by through a series of experiments on human cells. The identified substances NAC, ECGG and PD-98059 were also the most effective substances on geroprotective drugs. These substances are already in dietary supplements available in the market. The scientists are hoping to maximize the effect of these substances while minimizing their corresponding side effects.

According to the Russian scientists, the use of the Geroscope algorithm has minimized the time and cost of identifying and developing new drugs for anti-aging. With the success of the Geroscope algorithm on identifying and modeling geroprotectors, scientists will push the algorithm to search for unknown substances with geroprotective properties and be able to create drugs not only to stop aging but also for the cure to age-related illnesses.
