Apply has constantly been known to keep a lot of its high-stakes endeavors in the down-low - secrecy plays an important role in making sure the company gets to actually make a profit from their valuable research. However, in a mostly unprecedented exception to the company's rather tight-lipped stance on sharing tech findings, Apple has found it pertinent to share with the general public their research on artificial intelligence.

The company's director on AI, Russ Salakhutdinov, has just made a statement at the NIPS conference in Barcelona, Spain announcing Apple's imminent release of their ongoing research on machine learning. The information on artificial intelligence will be greatly benefit those in the academia, opening doors to further studies that might very well change the landscape of the tech industry for years to come.

A big chunk of Apple's research on Artificial Intelligence will be available through the publishing of research papers and just general engagement with the larger AI community around the globe. Being notorious for its reputation as the most secretive big name in tech, the sudden shift in tone is nothing short of surprising, to say the least.

Salakhutdinov states that the reason for this lies in Apple's more pro-active stance with regards to attracting and retaining the top talent in the engineering and tech industries. With some areas of its company, Apple can afford to be quieter about. However, the AI industry is one that functions best with open communication and collaboration among researchers.

Yann LeCun, head of the Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research group, had mentioned in an interview last month that secrecy would be the death of Apple if left uncheck. Too much secrecy actually deters top talent from applying at a company.

In short, this move is a welcome one for all fields involved. The public academia benefits from the discoveries made by Apple in the field, top talent and hires are given more incentive to get into the company, and the community will invariably benefit from the tech development to be made by the research.
