Google gets a leg up on competitors by being the first to offer dozens of film and video titles in 4K ultra-high-definition or 4K UHD on their app store. Google Play Movies now promises to start off with 125 titles with more slated to come. Although 4K videos and films have been slowly made available on Play Movies over the past weeks, it was only recently that the company officially announced the inclusion of UHD to their roster of downloadable content on Play Movies.

Currently, the purchasable content on Google Play Movies use the VP9 codec, one of the two main codecs that drive 4K UHD videos (the other one being HEVC). VP9 is known for making it possible to mix amazingly sharp video quality with more than dependable online streaming.

Excited consumers should also note that although the 4K UHD content can be purchased on Google Play from any Android OS supporting device or Play Movies on the web, only select products can stream them as of the moment. Namely, these are the Sony Bravia Android line of televisions, the Chromecast Ultra, and the Xiaomi's Mi Box 3. It's also worth noting that only North America is getting this treat as of the moment, i.e. the United States and Canada. Consumers from the other parts of the globe will have to wait a little longer for 4K UHD.

If you meet the location requirements and are eager to try out the new downloadable media content, Google is offering a limited-time deal of one free 4K UHD download to anyone who purchases the Chromecast Ultra. The offered freebie movie choices include Captain Philips and the new Ghostbusters film. That saves upwards of $20, the standard price for most 4K UHD purchases on Google Play Movies.

The advent of 4K UHD is surely upon us with this new feature from Google and is sure to get a lot of movie fans and Google Play consumers excited for the holidays.
