The Tabby's Star may be dimming because an alien civilization is mining energy from its surface, a study has recently suggested. Known officially as KIC 8462852, the star has captured the imagination of both scientists and conspiracy theorists since 2015 due to its mysterious dimming, which has left experts baffled.

There have been various explanations for the dimming associated with the star until now. One theory suggested that the mysterious phenomenon was evidence of a hypothetical structure that was being used by an advanced alien civilization to harness the star's energy. Another suggestion was that the dimming was caused by a dust ring around the star or a hail of comets traveling in between the star and the planet Earth.

The new study suggests that the dimming can be attributed to aliens mining energy from the Tabby's Star, because the latter gives off jets that can be used as a source of energy. Published by Professor Eduard Heindl from Germany's Furtwangen University, the recent research provides a mathematical model to suggest alien involvement.

"If a super civilization has used all raw material of its planets, they could found more in their star, for example, our sun has at least 6,000 times more metals as the planets, "said Professor Heindl, according to Mail Online. " To mine this resource, they have to lift the material of their star into an orbit to cool down the stuff and use it.  This is done by star lifting. We don't know exactly how to do that, but a good guess is, heat one spot of the sun beyond the normal temperature (6,000°K) by mirrors and generate a beam of matter by magnetic fields."

According to Professor Heindl, the dimming exhibited by the star cannot be attributed to a natural phenomenon like being covered by comets or other celestial objects because the light curve is unusually smooth with very steep edges. The researcher suggests that such a phenomenon fits more with the "science fiction" idea of star lifting, which is basically a mining technology process that extracts star matter.

Professor Heindl's paper has not been peer reviewed yet. The researcher has also said that further explanation of the concept is needed with more refined models.
