What hundreds of people recently saw in the sky above Lima, the capital city of Peru, is nothing like one's run-of-the-mill UFO conspiracy theory. While most reported UFO sightings are usually accompanied by at best some blurry and questionable video footage in the name of evidence, the floating orb that appeared above Lima has hundreds of eyewitnesses in addition to at least one legit-looking relatively high-quality footage.

As people have to come to know from the good folks at CanalN.pe, locals were left baffled by the weird sighting. The locals who saw the mysterious disk-shaped object are saying it was probably burning.

It appeared to have lit up the darkened sky as it continued to move at a brisk pace before disappearing behind a row of trees. As one can see in the video below shot by an eyewitness, the light coming from the object flickered as it moved behind a street lamp, indicating the time of the day.

Just like one would expect, alien hunters and conspiracy theorists from all over the world are in a frenzy ever since the UFO sighting was first reported by the local media, with some even going as far as speculating an imminent alien invasion, The Sun reports.

So, what do experts have to say about the creepy flying object hovering over Lima, Peru?

Well, the most plausible explanation is that the "burning" object was probably a Project Loon balloon. For the uninitiated, Project Loon (formerly Google X) is an initiative by Google to provide Internet access to remote areas.

Project Loon is yet to confirm whether or not the UFO was actually one of its balloons.

Meanwhile, people in other parts of the South American country have also been reportedly seeing strange lights in the sky -- a claim WSR cannot independently verify.
