Hoop Nuts LLC of Van Nuys in California Recall Pistachios for Salmonella

These days, the amount of food recalls seen throughout the country is simply nuts. And unfortunately, today, we can add another one to the list--pistachios.

Hoop Nuts LLC of Van Nuys, a California based company, is recalling 1,200 pounds of pistachios after the report that some of the products may contain Salmonella.

Salmonellosis is an infection with bacteria called Salmonella. Most infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and you can recover without treatment. However, in some, the diarrhea may be so severe that patients may need to be hospitalized. 

With such a healthy choice like the pistacho, it's certainly sad to see this little guy take such a bad wrap.

A nut commonly eaten for its health purposes, the plant was first cultivated commercially to the United States in the 1970s, according to reports. California is the primary producer of the product at 98 percent. Pistachios may be purchased in the shell or as shelled kernels and they offer antioxidants, multiple vitamins and minerals, protein and heart healthy fats that are often added to various diets to increase certain health benefits. 

The recalled nuts were sold under the brand names ARO Pistachio and Orandi Farms as Pistachio Halves 'n Pieces in 30 pound white corrugated boxes.

The dry roasted pistachios, according to Food and Safety News, are marked with lot #121203 and the raw pistachios are identifiable by lot #1-121213, and the recalled products were distributed in California.

All we can say is, that's nuts.
