An interesting study from the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit suggests that, an active ingredient 'resveratrol' found in red grapes and red wine not only protects your heart but also has the potential to protect against hearing loss and cognitive decline.

Michael Seidman from Henry Ford, who led the study was quoted in Daily Pioneer stating, "Our latest study focuses on resveratrol and its effect on the body's response to injury - something that is believed to be the cause of many health problems including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, ageing and hearing loss."

In order to prove the hypothesis, the study was conducted on a group of mice. One group of mice was provided with resveratrol while the other group was deprived of the compound. They then subjected the mice to a loud noise. On doing so they noticed that those mice who were given the resveratrol compound suffered with a comparatively less hearing loss when compared to the group that were not provided with the compound.

Resveratrol is a chemical that protects against body's inflammatory process as it relates to aging, hearing loss, cognition.

Designed to identify the potential protective mechanism of resveratrol following noise exposure by measuring its effect on cyclooxygenase-2, or COX-2, the study found that resveratrol before a loud noise significantly reduced reactive oxygen species formation, inhibited COX-2 expression and reduced noise-induced hearing loss following noise exposure in rats, reports UPI.

The study shows how resveratrol reduces hearing loss and also cognitive decline.

Prior to this studies have shown how red wine protects against heart diseases, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and even cancer.

The study was published in the journal Otalaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
