BMW M5 Specs Get An Upgrade, First In The Segment To Get AWD

The new car in the BMW M series M5 will feature an All Wheel Drive or AWD, practically making it a supercar. The BMW M5 Spec AWD, will be the first for a car in the passenger segment. Previously only sedans have been equipped with AWD.

The Munich product expert Sven Arens spoke with GoAuto, Australia, at the premier of the new 2017 BMW 5 series. He said,

"Yes, all-wheel-drive. 20:80 [torque] split."

AWD in the M5 is a big deal since this would be the first time that a passenger car will get the AWD system. Previously, only SUVs have had the feature.

Arens suggested that the new spec should be named 2+2WD rather than AWD to emphasize on the car's rear-biased setup. With the engines becoming more powerful than ever, the new AWD spec in BMW M5 is a welcome change. For 2WD the cut-off is 700Nm of torque, whereas with the AWD the power can go beyond 700Nm. With the new AWD system, zero to 100km/hr figures will be far better than the current versions of BMW M series.

BMW's head of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson,said, "Consumers want more performance and less CO2, so there's a strong case for introducing this technology into future performance models," as reported in autocar UK. The BMW M5's spec AWD, will compete against the yet-to-be-revealed Mercedes-AMG E63 and the Audi RS6. Both the cars feature the AWD system.

The AWD system in non-SUV cars was long due as 2WD system has reached its peak. With top brands taking the initiative, consumers will have multiple options each delivering top performance. The BMW M5 AWD will be revealed in 2017 and a worldwide release is expected, early in 2018.
