Affordable VR seems to be around the corner. Oculus, the virtual reality company which is owned by Facebook has announced it is developing an affordable VR headset and may have started a race. At the Oculus developer summit in San Jose, Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged the unaffordability of present VR headsets.

Affordable VR headsets are not currently available in the market. On the other hand, Oculus faces a tough competition from other players in its own segment. Google has already entered the affordable VR market with recently launched Daydream VR headset powered by mobile.

Affordable VR headsets are not provided by most of the companies. Then there is HTC vive which is not at all cheap. Although HTC Vive is not affordable compared to other VR headsets but it has been well received by gamers.

Sony is set to launch PlayStation VR headsets next week. These VR headsets will work with PlayStation 4 and will be the only affordable VR on the market. Although it will be cheaper than the Oculus VR headsets it will not be that powerful when compared to other VR headsets.

Oculus Rift vs HTC Vive vs PlayStation VR

Oculus and Facebook both need an affordable VR headset that is powerful and offers high-end visuals yet at the same time is affordable. Oculus will have to search for a middle ground to develop a VR headset that is affordable and powerful.

Mr. Mark Zukerburg, said, "We believe that there is a sweet spot - a standalone virtual reality product that is high quality, that is affordable, and you can bring with you out into the world. It's still early, so I don't want to get your hopes up too much," as reported by BBC.

It was strange, that Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey was missing from the event, where such an important announcement pertaining to the development of affordable VR was made by Zuckerberg.

A VR environment to interact with friends was also unveiled by Mr. Zukerberg. Using Oculus Rift's handheld touch controllers, the virtual reality avatars can be controlled. Unless an affordable VR headset is developed it will be a challenge for Oculus and Facebook to reach the masses with these products.
