'Walking Dead' Record May Have Inspired Zombie Hackers (Video)

It seems that even hackers are getting in on the action when it comes to this latest season of "The Walking Dead." Yesterday, an emergency alert about zombies interrupted Montana television viewers as they watched the "Steve Wilkos Show."

An emergency buzzer noise sounded as the alert system issued warnings for Powell, Broadwater, Jefferson, Lewis & Clark and Meagher counties in Montana. A voice then broke in over the show and warned, "Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from their graves and attacking the living. Follow the messages onscreen that will be updated as information becomes available. Do not attempt to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are considered extremely dangerous."

Although the hackers haven't yet been identified, KRTV has issued a public apology. They announced that someone had apparently hacked the Emergency Alert System and that the warning did not originate from KRTV.

This hacker instance comes hard on the heels of another zombie-related incident. The television series, "The Walking Dead," set a record during its last broadcast on Sunday with an audience of 12.3 million. About 7.7 million of those viewers were between the ages of 18 and 49, an impressive feat considering that a cable series has never reached that big of an audience in that age group.

The fact that this hacking did occur, though, shouldn't be all that surprising. With the television series at an all-time popular high and with zombie-inspired films such as "Warm Bodies" being released, the public is tuning in to watch the risen dead. In fact, even governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have issued reports about what to do during a zombie attack.

As far as the hackers go, though, they're still being sought. Currently, engineers from KRTV are investigating the incident in order to determine exactly what happened and if it affected other media outlets.
