Social Media Photos Can Boost Self-Esteem; Research Says

Self-esteem has been a problem for many. Technology today might help people undergoing this problem. Current research shows how social media can help boosting one's self-esteem.

Facebook alone can accumulate 4.5 billion likes according to research. As many know that you can post status, photos, and other stuff. People nowadays  people tends to feel good if ever a lot of users will like their post and gets depressed if they are ignored. To investigate this trend, experts conducted a research on how social media affects people, according to Science Daily.  

A team of researchers from the University of California, led by a postdoctoral scholar in informatics, Yu Chen the author of the study, surveys college students. 41 participants were gathered and track over a one month period.

The volunteers were asked to download an app on their phones, by which researchers can document their moods during the first week of study. Then a different app can be used for photos and track their moods over the next three weeks. It shows that three times a day the students use the app and report their moods.

In line with this, the researchers divided the students into three groups over the last three weeks if the study. The volunteers in the first group were asked to take a selfie every day. The second group was asked to take a photo daily of things that normally makes them happy. The last group was asked to send a photo of what they think can make another person happy.

The results were analyzed by the experts and compared the data of the volunteers during their first week of the study. Their experts then weigh their moods. The findings show that by taking daily photos, all three groups experienced high improvements with their moods.

In an interview with Live Science, Yu Chen stated that "We were not entirely surprised that users increased their positive feelings after conducting these exercises by taking photos." She added that the result regarding the third group was volunteers were asked to send photos to others surprised them, for it shows that sending photos to make other people happy,  makes the participants calmer.
