Niantic Labs introduces a new feature called buddy system to the popular AR game Pokémon. This feature allows players to have their own pokémon to accompany them in catching other Pokémon just like Pikachu and Ash. Aside from having a companion there are some benefits to it as a trainer.

To start with the buddy system, a player may choose only one Pokémon to be designated as their buddy. Pro tip, do not choose a strong Pokémon since "buddy" Pokémon cannot participate in other gaming tasks. You should also not pick rare Pokémon because they cannot be traded to other trainers. It will also take you longer to acquire your perks in a form of candy.

The reward of having a Pokémon buddy in your quest as a Pokémon trainer is earning candy. Candy is an article of trade in the game which allows trainers to evolve their Pokémon. For a trainer to be able to earn a candy, he/she must walk his/her buddy. According to Kotaku Australia, the distance of walk to earn a candy depends on the Pokémon buddy you have. Most Pokémon buddies only require 1 to 2 kilometers of walk for a single candy reward like Pikachu and Raichu. However, some rare types require more than 2 kilometers. For the legendary Pokemons Moltres, Articuno, Zapdos, Mewtwo and Mew the number of kilometer per candy reward is still unknown and what you have guessed, it must be higher. The new feature of the game helps the players to level up in the game by acquiring rarer Pokémons.

As reported on Game Rant, aside from the new feature, the update also included several bug fixes  commonly encountered by players like compatibility issues, game crashing, app excessive loading and GPS location error. Niantic also announced that there are a lot more features to be added in future updates and even teased that there will be a wearable app for players with wearable tech units.
