Chicken Salad Recall: Food May Contain Listeria Monocytogenes
Sally Sherman Foods of Mount Vernon, NY recalled over 3,000 pounds of various chicken products Thursday as they may contain Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS).
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that infects foods, typically resulting in a serious infection known as Listeriosis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The disease primarily affects older adults, newborns, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. However, sometimes individuals without those risk factors can also be affected.
The products currently subject to recall have the establishment number "P-4400" inside the USDA mark of inspection and the items were sent to the following locations: New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, according to the Food Safety Network.
The possible pathogen contamination was discovered by in-plant sampling of products, which were returned with positive results for Listeria monocytogenes. So far, however, no reports have been received regarding any illness due to the consumption of these products.
Those who may become infected with listeriosis may experience flu-like symptoms within up to two months after eating contaminated food. Anyone exhibiting symptoms should seek medical attention as listeriosis requires antibiotics for treatment, according to the CDC.
Consumers are advised not to consume these products and any who have them should throw them away or return to the place of purchase.
