One of the world's most massive wind farms will be situated in Britain, where it will power more than one million homes. DONG Energy, an offshore wind developer, announced that the 1.2 gigawatt Hornsea Project One will be constructed off the coast of Yorkshire in Northern England.

The massive wind farm will cover approximately 160 square miles where 174 wind turbines, each one 190 meters tall, will be used to generate power. The project is scheduled for completion by 2020. Its wind turbines are taller than London's "Gherkin" tower.

"It is ground-breaking and innovative, powering more homes than any offshore wind farm currently in operation," Brent Cheshire, Dong Energy's U.K. country chairman, said in a news release. "To have the world's biggest ever offshore wind farm located off the Yorkshire coast is hugely significant, and highlights the vital role offshore wind will play in the U.K.'s need for new low-carbon energy."

The Hornsea Project One will create approximately 2,000 jobs and 300 persons will be employed once the project is completed. In addition, this new project could enable Britain to meet its standards to limit greenhouse gas emissions, which were discussed at the World Climate Change Conference 2015 (COP21) in Paris.
