As 2016 approaches Sirius may be referred to as the 'New Year's star.' That's right, during the birth of the New Year 2016, Sirius will be one of the brightest stars in the night sky, where it will reach its highest point as midnight breaks into the New Year.

This will be the same this year and every new in the future. Sirius is found in the constellation Canis Major, which is the famous Dog Star pattern.

This year it is easy to find Sirius since it is going to be one of the brightest stars seen from the Earth, according to a news release. The name Sirius means sparkling or scorching. If you are not sure where to look as the New Year approaches, look out for the prominent Belt stars of the constellation Orion, since Orion's Belt always directs to Sirius.

Sirius is at its highest point in the sky at midnight every New Years. This is referred to as a 'midnight culmination' of Sirius by astronomers. As the New Year breaks, Sirius is at its highest point.

The star Sirius can be seen at the peak of midnight, where it will be the highest in the sky around midnight, or midway between sunset and sunrise, every New Year's Eve.
