The Walking Dead's Sixth Season Promises Even More Special Effects

When it comes to The Walking Dead, you may be more interested in the television series than the comics. However, the progenitor of both, Robert Kirkman, was at New York Comic Con to talk about the newest season and upcoming comics.

Currently, The Walking Dead is entering its sixth season, and it promises to be one of the most interesting yet. While the plot is heating up, the special effects used on screen are also supposed to be spectacular.

"We're continuing to decay them and make them look good," said Robert Kirkman in a panel at New York Comic Con. "There are a lot of green noses."

The green noses, of course, refer to "zombies" who wear green on their noses which can then be removed later via green screen.

Of course, this isn't the only special effect that occurs in The Walking Dead. Michonne's katana is actually only about a foot long in reality. The rest of the sword is later added in with the help of computers. Any heads she cuts off are also added in later; specialists "cut" an actor's head from his body in the film, and then spin it around in the air to make it look more realistic as it falls.

In season 2, as an example, Glenn hits a zombies' head off with a shelf. In order to make it look realistic, the creators scanned the head of the zombie so that it could be ripped off on film.

The special effects are only going to continue in season six, as well. There's going to be "some water zombie action," as Kirkman put it. And while it's going to be taking place on a boat, the character won't be on a boat all of the time. And while they may think the ocean is a safe haven, they'll soon find that it's far from that.

The sixth season of the Walking Dead premiered on Sunday, and averaged a staggering 14.6 million views overall, rating 7.43 among adults 18 to 49.
