This year's New York Comic Con showed off stars and shows of all times. But one of the real showstoppers was a sneak peak behind the new season of 12 Monkeys, a show that delves not only into the spread of a deadly virus, but also time travel.

If you haven't seen the show, it's about James Cole, a time traveler who travels back from the year 2043 in order to stop the release of a deadly virus by an organization known as "The Army of the Twelve Monkeys." The virus caused the death of most of the world's population, and so it's up to Cole and other characters to stop the plague before it begins.

What's truly interesting about 12 Monkeys is that it deals with time paradoxes. While time travel, according to Einstein's theory of general relativity, should be possible, there are certain instances that aren't.

While in the show it's slightly different, in reality time travel should be possible. An extremely powerful gravitational field, such as that produced by a spinning black hole, could warp the fabric of existence so that spacetime bends back on itself, creating what is known as a closed time-like curve (CTC).

However, there's a problem with this idea. Any macroscopic object traveling through a CTC would create paradoxes where cause and effect break down-thought CTC could be avoided at the quantum scale.

In the television series, the characters use a drug to allow them to travel back in time. In addition, the show works on multiple timelines and often runs into paradoxes, which is when people should, in theory, wink out of existence but don't.

In this latest season, the cast of characters won't just be in the present; they'll also be in the past.

"You never know for sure where it's all going," said Aaron Stanford, who plays Cole in the 12 Monkeys show, in a recent panel at New York Comic Con. "Over the course of the season a lot of things have happened."

Of course, there is apparently an ending for the show. Terry Gilliam, the director of the show, stated that "We have a target in place that we're headed toward." In fact he even said that when the first episode was released, they knew how it would all end.

Another point of interest is that Jennifer, the insane woman who supposedly helped release the plague, actually becomes sane. In addition, there is the hint that there will be a lot more for the characters to deal with other than the plague.

12 Monkeys season 2 will be coming in April of 2016.
