A loud snorer can certainly be annoying, but could it be the signs of a serious health issue? New research examines how loud snoring could be an indicator that something else is going on.

A certain concern for many dealing with excessive snoring is obstructive sleep apnea, otherwise known as a condition in which blocked airways can stop affected individuals from sleeping all together. When this happens, the individual may have difficulties getting a good night's rest from limited oxygen to the body and the brain.

Previous studies have also linked untreated sleep apnea to cognitive decline. However, an estimated 18 million Americans have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, with 90 percent unaware of their symptoms.

Fortunately, the disorder is not so difficult to treat. For many, a CPAP machine (continuous positive airway pressure) will help. For those that may need more in-depth treatments, such as nasal valvesor certain oral appliances, a trip to a specialist can help determine what's right for you.

The symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea may include excessive daytime sleepiness, breathing cessation during sleep and, as previously mentioned, loud snoring along with a list of other symptoms.
