Sometimes it's easy to forget just how many drinks you've had on a night out.

Now, a new iPhone app can actually track alcohol consumption as well as set goals for users who are looking to cut calories or monitor their drinking habits.

Drinkware, the United Kingdom's leading alcohol education charity, came up with this free app that contains an "extensive database" of drink brands and allows individuals to keep an accurate record of just how much they are drinking.

The tool provides "customized feedback" if you're working to cut back on your alcohol intake for health reasons.

Particularly for weight conscious individuals, the app presents alcohol intake based on calorie content and can help individuals pick healthier options or stop before they've had too much.

Previous studies have shown that excessive alcohol intake cannot only be dangerous but can also increase the risk of certain health issues.

In fact, those who've "blacked out" after a night of too much fun are actually disrupting neurons found in the hippocampus that can lead to cognitive issues. Though alcohol black outs don't kill brain cells, as once thought, they can disrupt connections between neurons that are crucial to learning and memory.

"We know that while lots of people recognize the need to cut back on their alcohol intake, many lack the support to actually make a change. This app has been designed to help people change their drinking, by providing support and encouragement in a non-judgemental way at the times and locations people need it the most," said Ben Butler, head of digital at Drinkaware, according to The Drinks Business. "Our app helps people to make positive changes in their relationship with alcohol, so they can start to enjoy the health benefits of cutting down or giving up."
