First Walrus Pup Born in German Zoo [VIDEO]

The  Hamburg Hagenbeck Zoo proudly presented its two week-old male Walrus calf,  the first ever walrus born in Germany.

Born on June 15, to mother Dyna (17), the unnamed calf is the first and only walrus born in Germany. The zoo officials have separated the mother and calf from others to strengthen their bond. Once the mother-child bond properly, the officials will introduce the calf to the rest of the family that includes Bull Odin (17), the cow Polosa (17) and cub Olivia (6).

After birth the calf was also allowed to take a long bath for the first time. Under the mother's watchful eyes, the calf crawled and got into the waters. Dyna followed her young one to give the first swimming lesson.

The group of walrus arrived at Hamburg a year earlier from the Moscow Zoo. They were transferred to complete the most ambitious dream of the Tierpark Hagenbeck- to host the only breeding group in Germany of these amazing animals, according to the zoo website.

The zoo authorities unveiled the cute walrus calf to the public on July 2.

The walrus calf already sports thick, bushy whiskers and wrinkled skin. The zoo plans on organizing a naming contest where the zoo-goers can suggest names for the wobbly walrus calf.

 The zoo goers can see the calf together with the South American fur seals.

A walrus mother is known to hold her baby just like humans. In the first few uncertain days of life the mother walrus bonds well with her newborn. A female walrus is known to give birth to a single calf at a time and the newborns weigh close to 45-75 kg and are generally 95-123 cm long.
