If you're more feline friendly, chances are, you might also be smarter than the average dog lover.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Carroll University in Wisconsin shows that cat owners might also be more open-minded and sensitive than dog owners. On the other hand, the study found that dog owners were typically more active.

"It makes sense that a dog person is going to be more lively, because they're going to want to be out there, outside, talking to people, bringing their dog," said Guastello, according to The Daily Mail. "Whereas, if you're more introverted and sensitive, maybe you're more at home reading a book and your cat doesn't need to go outside for a walk."

The study findings showed that cat lovers scored much higher on intelligence tests compared to dog owners. However, dog owners were more likely to be outgoing, loyal and energetic overall, according to Live Science.

For the study, researchers asked 600 students to fill out personality questionnaires about their cat or dog preference. Findings revealed that 60 percent of participants preferred dogs, while around a third of participants liked or disliked cats and dogs equally.

However, researcher Denise Guastello, a psychology professor at Carroll University, found that the average cat owner is more reserved, perceptive, tolerant and better at breaking rules than the average dog owner.

Whether you're a cat or a dog person, previous studies have shown just how important owning a pet can be. For instance, having a cat or dog can help significantly reduce stress levels, particularly for ill individuals.

More information regarding the findings can be seen via the annual Association for Psychological Science meeting.
