British Actor Bob Hoskins Dies at 71

British actor Bob Hoskins died Tuesday. He was 71.

Reports from Hoskins's publicist Clair Dobbs came Wednesday that his passing was due to pneumonia. He had retired two years before following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, according to CNN.

A statement released by his agent in August 2012 noted the following regarding his diagnosis, courtesy of The Daily Mail: "Bob Hoskins wishes to announce that he will be retiring from acting, following his diagnosis of Parkinson's disease last autumn. 

"He wishes to thank all the great and brilliant people he has worked with over the years, and all of his fans who have supported him during a wonderful career. 

"Bob is now looking forward to his retirement with his family, and would greatly appreciate that his privacy be respected at this time."

The symptoms of Parkinson's can be devastating, ranging from tremors to difficulty with overall movement and a general slowing down of the body, according to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

The Oscar-nominated actor was primarily known for his roles in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Mermaids."

His first shot at fame was in the 1978 British TV miniseries "Pennies from Heaven," according to IMDb.com.

His last film role was as one of the dwarves in 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart.

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Bob," said a statement from wife Linda and children Alex, Sarah, Rosa and Jack, according to ABC News.

He is survived by his wife and children.
